DEEP DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING

Although the lymphatic system has no pump like the heart in the circulatory system, the movement from the act of breathing is a lymphatic pump in itself and can help direct lymph. Proper deep breathing is one of the most important facilitators of lymphatic function.

When you breathe deeply, you create deeper contractions of your diaphragm. This acts as an external pressure on the largest lymph vessel – your thoracic duct – which brings lymphatic fluid from the lower half of your body and limbs up toward your heart. It’s as simple as expanding your belly when you inhale and relaxing your belly when you exhale.

HOW-TO-DRY-BRUSH

1. Start by lightly massaging your right and left supraclavicular nodes, located just above your collarbone, in a motion out toward your shoulders

2. Stimulate the axillary lymph nodes located in your armpits, by placing your hand in your armpit, pulsing upwards

3. Stimulate the inguinal lymph nodes located at the top of your thigh, massaging c-strokes upward

4. Stimulate the popliteal lymph nodes, located behind the knee, pulsing upwards

5. Take your dry brush, starting at your feet and moving upwards, brush with long gentle strokes, towards your inguinal lymph nodes

6. Moving to your abdomen, dry brush in a clockwise circle; this is the direction your colon runs and will help stimulate your digestion, then brush your abdomen in strokes from the navel down and navel up

7. Moving to your chest, brush towards your axillary nodes in long gentle strokes

DRY BRUSHING

Dry brushing is an ancient Ayurvedic practice of gently brushing the body with a dry brush to stimulate the lymphatic system. It is one of the simplest and most effective practices for the health of the skin and body, providing support for proper function of the lymphatic system when done consistently over time. While dry brushing can assist in lymphatic flow and promote healthy lymphatic circulation, other benefits include: allowing for a more efficient immune system, stimulating blood flow by increasing circulation, exfoliating and improving the appearance of the skin, helping to remove stagnation, aiding in digestion, and increasing energy. Dry brushing is a wonderful practice to complement Ballancer®Pro treatments, using this method on days without compression therapy.

Mavericks Wellness now offers dry brushes for purchase. Our brushes are sourced from Sweden, are made by hand and made of natural hair and oak. To purchase, please email hello@maverickswellness.com

WHAT IS THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM?

The lymphatic system is a set of interconnected nodes, ducts, and vessels. It lies just under the skin and is responsible for eliminating cellular waste, storing and distributing fat and fat-soluble vitamins, transporting white blood cells to assist in immune function, and removing interstitial fluid from tissues to minimize swelling.

In an ideal world, we are able to naturally stimulate our lymphatic system in our everyday movements. Of course, the world we live in is far from ideal, and modern life stressors combined with a lack of physical activity means that we may require extra assistance. Furthermore, the lymphatic system differs from the circulatory system in that it doesn’t have a pump, like the heart. Instead, it relies on skeletal muscle contractions to push fluid unidirectionally towards the neck area, where it empties into the subclavian vein. This is where the Ballancer®Pro and other stimulating lymphatic system techniques become needed.

ABOUT THE OWNER

Mavericks Wellness is owned and operated by Miranda Robson Calkins. Since she was young, Miranda has been interested in wellness and particularly drawn to nutrition and how it can affect our health, mental health, and how we heal. This interest heighted when her father was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. After many years of doing her own research, she decided to enroll in the Holistic Nutrition Program with the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, graduating as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist in March of 2021.

When learning about the different body systems, she was drawn to the lymphatic system and its role in health at a cellular level. After learning more about the lymphatic system and its purpose, she started applying numerous lymphatic self-care practises such as: deep breathing, dry brushing, rebounding, and self-massage. Miranda then started exploring manual machines focussing on the lymphatic system. This is where she discovered the Ballancer®Pro. Miranda purchased her machine in March 2020, and has been amazed by the benefits it has provided for her and her family. These benefits have included: calming of the nervous system, better digestion, helping with fluid retention, clearer skin, faster recovery from exercise, and overall feeling well. After close to two years benefitting from the Ballancer®Pro, she decided that she wanted to help others feel the same by offering treatments - and thus Mavericks Wellness was founded.
